TWAC is back at Hammonasset for the annual pizza truck September picnic! This year, the event has been combined with the Fall Workshop. Topics include tree planting, invasive management, protecting trees from


abiotic stressors, insects and diseases, and safe roadside work zones. All presentations are outdoors and hands-on. Continental breakfast and pizza truck lunch included.

8:00-8:30 Registration, Sign-In, Coffee and continental breakfast, Visit with exhibitors.

8:35 Welcome, Introductions, Overview

8:45 – 9:15 Invasive Identification and Removal. This session will be in the field and include identification of common invasive plants and techniques for removal and control. Led by David Roach of All Habitat Services, LLC.

9:15 – 9:45 Tree Planting. This session will include instruction on proper tree planting and hands-on opportunities to plant. Instructed by Bruce Villwock, Middlefield Tree Warden, and Darryl Newman of Planter’s Choice.

9:45 – 10:30 Tree Maintenance: Air Spading, Mulching, and Pruning with Cameron Pierce, Dan Dalton, and Owen Ludwig of Davey. This session will include a demonstration of Air Spade and arboricultural applications, proper mulching, and pruning (objectives and how to make a correct cut).

10:30 - 10:50 BREAK

10:50 – 11:15 Pre-trip Aerial Lift Inspection with Greg Speroni of Altec. This session will go over all the safety components of a pre-trip inspection that aerial lift users need to complete before each use.

11:15 – 12:30 Signs, Signals, and Barricades with Robert Hunt and Catherine Zinnsner of Conn OSHA. This session will discuss Work Zone Safety and include in the field demonstrations.

12:30 – 1:00 Insects and Diseases Mini Talks. In this session, Drs. Claire Rutledge, Yonghao Li, and Bob Marra from CT Agricultural Experiment Station will give brief presentations on the most current insect and disease issues that Tree Wardens should be aware of.

1:00 – 3:00 Pizza, salad, gelato, and coffee served by the New Haven Pizza Truck!

1:00 -2:00 Insects and Diseases continued. In this session, attendees will have the opportunity to go to each CT Agricultural Experiment Station exhibit and ask follow up questions and discussion to the mini talks.

2:00 Workshop ends, closing announcements, and CEU distribution.

2:15 - ? Happy Hour for those that wish to stay. BYOB alcohol allowed. Non-alcoholic beverages provided.

Please note this workshop is rain or shine and will be held entirely outdoors. Dress accordingly.
